What many women were never told
For women of my generation, hormone replacement therapy was often talked about in hushed, cautionary tones. It was frowned upon. Risky. Something to avoid unless you absolutely had to.
That was certainly my experience, and I never chose to do it.
Recently, I was also told that my higher cholesterol levels are likely related, at least in part, to the loss of estrogen’s protective effect. That caught my attention—not because it made me wish I’d done things differently, but because it reminded me how little many of us were taught about what menopause actually affects.
It’s not just hot flashes. It can touch sleep, mood, metabolism, bone health, heart health, and overall quality of life. And for many women, the conversation around hormone therapy is far more nuanced now than it was years ago.
