Youth4Music News

The Youth4Music Nipissing Event was held on October 20 at Big Medicine Studio at Nipissing First Nation. The event was an opportunity for all interested youth and educators to partake in conversations about music and music education, and how music could be used to build community. A big thanks to Penny Couchie and Sid Bobb, the co-artistic directors of Big Medicine Studio, for their continued support, and to Youth4Music Ambassadors Cole Forrest, Kelsey Borgford, and Brooklyn Sawyer for planning and co-hosting the event.

My Grandfather was a big drum

The world premiere of My Grandfather was a big drum, the second in a series of videos by Cole Forrest, was held on October 20 at the Near North Mobile Media Lab in North Bay, Ontario. This short documentary was made as part of Ngamwag Shkinweg (The Youth are Singing), Youth4Music’s Indigenous initiative. The premiere began with a wonderful performance by Josh Stevens, one of the musicians featured in the film, followed by the film’s official screening and a reception where guests were able to chat with Cole and cinematographer Harrison Clements. Music Education Conferences

On October 19, Colleen, Matty, and Laura from the Youth4Music Winnipeg Hub attended Tempo, the annual conference of the Manitoba Music Educators’ Association. This was the first time Youth4Music was represented at Tempo and it was a huge success! Our sincere thanks to Karen Tole-Henderson and the Manitoba Music Educators’ Association for arranging this incredible opportunity for our Youth4Music Ambassadors. Youth4Music was also represented at the FAMEQ conference in Quebec City, and the OMEA conference in Hamilton, ON in early November. We’re so happy to have been a part of these conferences, where many new connections were made!
