WEEKEND RECIPE | ORANGE IS THE ONLY FRUIT
Tangerine Dreams
Tangerines, clementines and satsumas: Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without them. These colourful, juicy, vitamin C-packed fruits (still, for many families, a toe-of-the-Christmas-stocking tradition) are a seasonal snacking treat in their own right, just as they are. Or you could...
Chocolate-dipped tangerines
Peel six seedless tangerines, clementines or satsumas. Divide into segments, remove any stringy pith and dip each segment into melted dark chocolate. Put each chocolate-dipped segment onto a baking sheet lined with parchment and refrigerate for around an hour (or until the chocolate has set) and serve as an accompaniment to ice-cold Cointreau.
Fruity possets
Make 6 fruity possets and keep them in the fridge for glamorous dessert 'emergencies'. Heat 600ml double cream with 200g golden caster sugar, stirring continuously until the sugar dissolves. As soon as the mixture comes to the boil, remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly for a couple of minutes before adding the zest and juice of 1 lemon along with the zest and juice of 4 tangerines, clementines or satsumas. Whisk together, divide between 6 glasses and allow to chill for at least 2 hours before serving topped with more citrus zest and shortbread biscuits on the side.
Orange cake
This one couldn't be easier! Preheat the oven to 180ºC/gas mark 4, and lightly grease and flour a 20cm cake tin. Crack 2 large eggs into a blender and blitz with 125ml vegetable oil, 225g caster sugar and 3 peeled, deseeded tangerines, clementines or satsumas (or whisk the whole lot together using an electric hand whisk). Weigh 225g self-raising flour into large bowl and add the blended mixture. Stir well to thoroughly combine all the ingredients, pour into the prepared tin and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until golden-brown on top and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before removing from the tin and serve warm, with plenty of whipped or clotted cream.
Orange festive fizz
For each serving, pour 60ml tangerine, clementine or satsuma juice and 20ml Campari into the bottom of a Champagne flute. Top up with around 60ml Champagne, Prosecco or any other dry, sparkling wine, stir briefly, and serve immediately. Cheers!

WEEKEND WINE | SWEET DESSERTS, GUILTY PLEASURES
From honey-like Muscats and Moscatos, Sauternes, Sweet Reislings, to luxurious Tokaji – dessert wines are the perfect finish to a celebratory meal, or maybe a sweet little treat to savour. Here's just a few of the greats.
Moscato d'Asti, Half bottle (37.5cl) - Fontanafredda
Admitting to liking Moscato d'Asti feels like confessing a guilty secret. It's sweet. It's a bit fizzy. It doesn't have much more alcohol than lager (5.5 %ABV). It's not a "proper' wine. Oh, but it's gorgeous: like sitting under a vine, popping juicy Muscat grapes into your mouth. Instead of orange juice with your smoked salmon and scrambled egg, you ought to have this | £11.10
Cyprès de Climens Sautenes-Barsac, 37.5cl - Château Climens |
2016. 13.5 %ABV. Aromatic nose with hints of vanilla and aromas of candied yellow fruits, apricot and honey. Mellow, ripe and fresh in the mouth. An outstanding Barsac | £22
Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos, 50cl - Patricius
Six puttonyos are only made in exceptional vintages and from 1st Class Growths vineyards. It is typically a more intense, complex, noble and sweeter style than 5 puttonyos. The Tokaji Aszu Patricius 6-Puttonyos has a dense exotic and spicy bouquet with apricot jam and marmalade notes. It’s just beautiful. 11% ABV | £47
Aleatico di Puglia, 50cl - Francesco Candido |
Crimson in colour developing hints of amber with maturity. Broad, rich, penetrating and showing maturity on the nose. On the palate, medium sweet with a good acid backbone, velvety and delicious with dried raisin characteristics reminiscent of Muscat. 14.5% ABV | £19.95
Les Garonelles, Sauternes, 37.5cl - Lucien Lurton Collection
Made with the expertise of Bérénice Lurton of Château Climens, this has an expressive nose with aromas of apricot, super-ripe pineapple and crème brulée. In the mouth, it is elegant and well-balanced, evolving with a long finish full of finesse. 12.5% ABV | £11.75

Garments for a true gentleman
Thomas Fortin menswear brings to the world its hand-finished accessories crafted from beautiful fabrics woven and printed in England. Shown here is a blue Walking Canes scarf with 100% silk twill tassel fringe (£165) 128cmx24cm (fabric length). This unique in-house design depicts a drawing of three gentleman’s walking canes laid over the trademark Thomas Fortin circular repeat design.
The 100% silk twill is printed in England, and then cut and made into a scarf with 50 knotted tassels added on each end. The variations in colour in the thread pick out the blues pinks and yellows of the scarf design and give the final 13cm fringe a very full-bodied feel. It is part of a range of scarves and other men’s silk accessories which can be found online at thomasfortin.com

MAGAZINE KIOSK | WHY WE LOVE PRINT

Curated by Daniel McCabe
With six brilliant releases under its belt, Bristol-born film mag Beneficial Shock has kindly put out another in time for Christmas. Each themed issue (somehow) mixes top-rank graphic illustration with an in-depth, sideways and humorous look at the world of film, this time highlighting how movies have explored the notions of ‘togetherness’ and ‘apartness’. So find out why twins and doppelgängers often scare us silly, meet the unconventional ‘family’ at the heart of Duncan Jones’s Moon, confront aliens and alienation in Greg Araki's Queer LA of the 1990s and, if you’re not hard enough, cry at the saddest movie goodbyes. And much more, of course. | £10 | Buy the magazine here

Screening and discussion of documentary film The Oil Machine
On 14 December, The Little Theatre Cinema is hosting a new documentary film, The Oil Machine, as part of the UK-wide programme of film events exploring the energy crisis and the fight over North Sea oil and gas. The film will be followed by a discussion on whether activists and investors can spark its end.
The Oil Machine explores our economic, historical and emotional entanglement with oil by looking at the conflicting imperatives around North Sea oil. This invisible machine at the core of our economy and society now faces an uncertain future as activists and investors demand change. Is this the end of oil?
By highlighting the complexities of how oil is embedded in our society – from high finance to cheap consumer goods – The Oil Machine brings together a wide range of voices from young activists, oil company executives, economists to pension fund managers and considers how this machine can be tamed, dismantled, or repurposed.
We have five to ten years to control our oil addiction, and yet the licensing of new oil fields is seen to be in direct contradiction with the Paris Climate Agreement. The drama of global climate action is playing out in the fight over North Sea oil. 82 minutes.
The Oil Machine is a Sonja Henrici Creates Production for BBC Scotland and supported by The National Lottery through Screen Scotland. The screening will take place at The Little Theatre Cinema, Bath, on Wednesday 14 December at 6.30pm.
Tickets available from picturehouses.com.

Gallerist who offered early Banksy art for £150 to host pop-up art show
After a year of seeking exceptional talent, Banksy collaborator, publisher and gallerist Jonathan Lewis will put on a group pop-up art show in Bath offering prints, originals, and handmade curios from rising UK artists.
Under the banner of ART808, a website that provides hand-picked artists with a platform to promote and sell their work, Jon will be staging a group pop-up show in Bath the weekend before Christmas. Entitled, Rip it Up, Start Again, the show will host a collection of work by 12 artists, the culmination of Jon’s year-long journey to seek out rising and internationally acclaimed UK talent. Some of the headliners include artists Dan Rawlings, Lee Eelus, My Dog Sighs and Magnus Gjoen whose work will be appearing in Bath for the first time.
Jon was an early collaborator with Pictures on Walls, the legendary collective that shook the art world and helped to launch the stellar careers of Banksy, Invader, Conor Harrington, Paul Insect, Antony Micallef and Lee Eelus, whose latest hand-finished limited-edition print will be launching on Saturday 17 December at the show.
“I visited some friends in Bath in the early 2000s and was carrying a number of Banksy prints in a tube. I was keen to show off this up-and-coming West Country artist who was making waves in the capital. Having shown them the artwork, I offered to get them prints like this for £150 each, but they all politely declined." Jon recalls.
Recently, a signed edition of one of those prints, Girl with Balloon sold at a Sotheby's for £405,000. Despite the eye-watering price tag, Jon stresses that ART808 is about making great art accessible.
“If you love and appreciate the art, save up, buy it, hang it on the wall and keep an eye on the artist’s career, you never know what may happen, but at least you won’t be staring at a blank wall.”
Rip it Up, Start Again will be held on 16, 17 and 18 December (11am–6pm), at 15 New Bond Street, Bath, BA1 1BA.

ART FAIR | SHOWCASING ARTISTS FROM THE CITY

Bath Contemporary Artists' Fair, Sunday 10 December
The Bath Contemporary Artists' Fair (BCAF) is committed to bringing the best of contemporary art from the city and beyond right to the heart of Bath, with artwork including fine art, photography, sculpture, textiles and much more.
BCAF is focused on promoting and supporting artists by giving them the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work commission-free in an affordable way. Art fairs can be expensive (for the artist and the public) and tend to exist only annually. This can make the exposure limited and the costs prohibitive. BCAF has created a regular space where the best selected national and international artists can network with other artists, share ideas, connect with the public and where the public can connect with art.

The Bath Jazz Weekend, 6–8 January 2023
The third edition of the Bath Jazz Weekend will take place on the weekend of 6, 7 and 8 January 2023 at the Widcombe Social Club, Widcombe Hill, Bath.
The weekend has always been, as they say in Ireland, a good craic – the Widcombe Social Club bar is open throughout, with a menu of home-cooked food and musicians are free to hang out at any time over the weekend and bring their families, as are all members of the audience with single day or all weekend tickets.
The first two years of the event in 2019 and 2020 had no funding or sponsorship, but the musicians and production crew agreed in brilliant cooperative spirit to play and work for an equal share of the proceeds. A new cooperative way of promoting festivals was born, thanks to the generosity of all concerned – a festival sponsored by the contributions of all its participants and the willingness of an audience eager for more high-quality jazz and improvised music in a city that had lost much of it in recent years.
Yes, it's taking place in those in-between days after Xmas and New Year, before everyone goes back to school and work. But this timing suits those feeling jaded after the festivities, wanting to go out and engage with live music – and this includes the musicians themselves – so the timing has proved very successful.
More info and updates can be found at bathjazzweekend.com All weekend, single day and single session tickets are available in person, by telephone or online at bathboxoffice.org.uk

LOOKING BACK | OLD AND NEW

Words by Andrew Swift
Central Garage
This week’s archive photo takes us back only 13 years, to 2009, before the redevelopment of the Sawclose got under way. It shows the former Central Garage, which was opened around a century earlier in an old cheese warehouse by Alfred Richardson, who also owned the Bathwick Carriage Works at Cleveland Wharf. The advert accompanying it dates from 1909 and gives an idea of the services it provided for pioneering motorists.
To the right of it the garage was the Palace Theatre, revamped as the Regency Ballroom in 1957 and revamped again as a Bingo & Social Club in 1968. Bingo was still being played in 2009, but six years later the bulldozers moved in, leaving only the facade of the former theatre to serve as the entrance of a new hotel.
