WINES FOR THE WEEKEND  |  A ROTHSCHILD SELECTION

By DBM Wines, Clifton Village

Sometimes the simplest packaging can hide a real gem. DBM wines, with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, have put together a mixed case at a special discount.

The Baron Philippe de Rothschild (proprietor of Mouton Rothchild) own-label range has been developed by the family to bring good-value drinking wines to the table by utilising their extensive winemaking contacts in the Limoux region. To source the fruit they have developed strong relationships with local growers and in many instances they incorporate young vine fruit from their own Domaine Baron’arques.

DBM wines has created a mixed case with Syrah, Pinot Noir, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc that will cover all your essential needs at a very friendly price of just £107.88 for 12 bottles (equal to £8.99 per bottle).

Viognier, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Vin de Pays d'Oc; £8.99

"This wine has a lovely nose of delicate white peach mingled with a defined floral character. The palate has rich stone fruit, alongside a subtle almond character, while remaining clean and fresh."

Sauvignon Blanc, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Vin de Pays d'Oc; £8.99

"A great-value Southern French Sauvignon from high-quality Limoux fruit; clean and bright, fleshy texture and ripe mouthwatering finish - lovely."

Syrah, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Vin de Pays d'Oc; £8.99

"An intense deep garnet colour. The inviting ripe nose has notes of pepper and garrigue supported by super concentration on the palate. Supple texture and a fresh and juicy finish; very good value."

Pinot Noir, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Vin de Pays d'Oc; £8.99

"Made without the use of oak, from selected vineyards in the Limoux, this 100% Pinot Noir is light and fruity with a lovely spicy note. Hints of strawberry and raspberry on the nose. Soft, gentle tannins with a generous balanced finish. We thought it was a really good find; uncomplicated and excellent value."

WEEKEND BAKE  |  LIGHT AND FLUFFY

Recipes by Melissa Blease
Orange cake

Keats' season of mists and mellow fruitfulness waxes lyrical about vine fruits, apples and hazelnuts – and indeed, such produce epitomises the flavours of a British autumn. But the sun hasn't quite set on those lazy, hazy days of summer, and oranges offer the perfect bridge twixt soft summer berries and hearty autumn fruit.

This lively, cheerful cake – infused with a bright orange tang – is super-easy to throw together and perfect for either an impromptu afternoon tea, an indulgent dinner party dessert or just an instant mood-lifter, whatever the weather. You can replace the orange juice and zest with lemon, but if you're in the mood for a mellow uplift rather than a bracing wake-up call, the orange element results in a soft, sweet-tinged autumn sunset on a plate, delivered via the medium of freshly baked cake.

Ingredients (makes one big cake/8 big slices)

250g butter, at room temperature
250g caster sugar
4 medium eggs
1-2 tsp orange zest, finely grated
250g self-raising flour
85ml freshly squeezed orange juice
1 orange
1 lemon

For the icing:
125g icing sugar
5 teaspoons freshly squeezed orange juice
A scant handful of toasted almond flakes (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/gas mark 3. Lightly grease a 22cm round cake tin (preferably springform/clip-sided) and line with greaseproof paper.
  2. Using an electric whisk, cream the butter and sugar together for 4-5 minutes until very pale. Beat the eggs in one at a time – if the mixture appears to curdle towards the end of this process, sprinkle in a teaspoon of flour and everything will settle down again. Beat the orange zest into the mixture.
  3. Add the flour and mix well before slowly stirring the orange juice.
  4. Spoon the cake batter into the tin and bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 45-50 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. If the top starts to brown before the cake has baked through, loosely cover with a sheet of lightly buttered foil.
  5. Allow the cake to cool down in the tin on a wire rack for 10 minutes before removing it, peeling the lining paper off and allowing it to cool completely.
  6. Place the cake on a serving plate. Sift the icing sugar into a small bowl and stir in the orange juice until you have a slightly thick, pourable/spreadable consistency.
  7. Pour/spread the icing over the top of the cake and allow it drip down the sides if it wants to. Garnish with thin slices of orange and lemon, sprinkle the top with toasted almond flakes (if using) and leave the icing to set before serving in big slices accompanied by a slump of full-fat crème fraiche or a pool of double cream.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW  |   MARTI BURGESS

Because the night... belongs to Bristol

Marti Burgess, lawyer and partner at Bevan Brittan, owner of Lakota, and member of The Society of Merchant Venturers, talks Bristol in a Box – a new project intended to help prop up the evening economy while restrictions are in place.

Bristolians don’t just stand about during a crisis, as evidenced by the myriad folk who have come to the aid of the community during the 2020 pandemic, in myriad ways. Economically, the city is facing massive challenges – the likes of which it has never seen before, with certain sectors worse hit than others. Nightlife, beyond socially distanced dinners here and there, or a few drinks on the cobbles, has felt almost non-existent – there is certainly no blowing off steam while throwing shapes on a club dancefloor. Steam sharing is officially frowned upon. But there are those in the city who are thinking hard of ways to help this sector survive. Enter, Marti Burgess.

ON THE BOOK SHELF  |  BOOKER PRIZE CONTENDERS

We've chosen two of the six books shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2020, awarded annually to the best novel of the year written in English. With the prizewinner announced on 19 November, there's time to get read and get ahead!

The Shadow King

Ethiopia. 1935. With the threat of Mussolini’s army looming, recently orphaned Hirut struggles to adapt to her new life as a maid. Her new employer, Kidane, an officer in Emperor Haile Selassie’s army, rushes to mobilise his strongest men before the Italians invade.

When Emperor Haile Selassie goes into exile, Hirut helps disguise a gentle peasant as the emperor and soon becomes his guard, inspiring other women to take up arms. But how could she have predicted her own personal war, still to come? The Shadow King casts light on the women soldiers written out of African and European history. It is a captivating exploration of female power, and what it means to be a woman at war.

Published by Canongate Books, paperback, £9.99

Burnt Sugar

In her youth, Tara was wild. She abandoned her loveless marriage to join an ashram, endured a brief stint as a beggar, and spent years chasing after a dishevelled, homeless 'artist' – all with her young child in tow. Now she is forgetting things, mixing up her maid's wages and leaving the gas on all night, and her grown-up daughter is faced with the task of caring for a woman who never cared for her. Burnt Sugar is a love story and it is a story about betrayal between mother and daughter. Sharp as a blade and laced with caustic wit, Avni Doshi tests the limits of what we can know for certain about those we are closest to, and by extension, about ourselves.

Published by Hamish Hamilton, Penguin Random House, paperback, £14.99

OBJECT OF INTEREST  |  NEW COLLECTION

At Clifton Contemporary Art

Closer to Home: a new collection by Elaine Jones will be appearing at Clifton Contemporary Art from 5 – 21 November. Like the cycle of nature itself, the paintings of Elaine Jones grow layer by layer, texture on texture. They shift and develop and are reduced to be rebuilt again. Embracing natural forms, they are ethereal, restless and lucid. Her sources of inspiration can be found across the world, from the Arctic Circle to Central America, but this year, in unprecedented times, she has drawn from the living and elemental forces that surround her Bristol base and beyond into the South West peninsula. Elaine's latest paintings conjure the colour, space and feel of places that are closer to home, yet still speak of boundless depth and far distance.
